The Carmelite Charism

The Carmelite Order is guided by the principles and values contained in its Rule, given to the Order by Albert, the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Fundamental to the life of all Carmelites is to live in allegiance to Jesus Christ and embrace his Gospel as the supreme norm of life. Carmelites understand their lives to be influenced by the Spirit, enabling each to discover the call of the divine to live together in mutual service of one another and of all people.

The Carmelite’s entire life is characterized by an intense search for God with total adherence to the teachings of Christ. This requires continual transformation in Christ. Living with this ideal, the Carmelite cooperates in God’s plan, finding expression in fraternal life and apostolic zeal.

Contemplation

Contemplation is a fundamental value of Carmelite life, understood as the inner journey leading to unity of love with God. This love transforms us, emptying us of limited human ways and filling us with divine ways.

The Rule of St. Albert describes a community dedicated to prayerful attention to the Word. Contemplation begins with entrusting ourselves to God, discovering His presence in all moments. Carmelites make the crucified Christ the center of their lives, channeling all energy toward Him and detaching from all that impedes perfect charity.

This detachment leads to union with God—the ultimate goal. Expressions such as “purity of heart” and “total availability to God” capture this concept.

Fraternity

Contemplation helps Carmelites discover God’s presence in daily life and especially in others. Fraternity is where transformation is tested. The Rule requires Carmelites to be essentially brothers and sisters, developing quality relationships and imitating the Trinity and the early Christian community.

Being brothers and sisters means growing in communion, sharing possessions, and caring for one another’s well-being. Religious life in community is a sign of the Church, a mystery of communion and an icon of the Trinity.

Prayer

Prayer is how Carmelites relate to God as individuals and as a community. In prayer, one becomes open to God’s transformation through all events of life. This sustains authentic relationships and enables compassion and solidarity.

Prayer is the source of Carmelite spiritual life and determines the quality of fraternal life and service. Faithful prayer makes Carmelite brotherhood a witness to God’s presence among His people.

Service

The Carmelite evangelical life is a commitment to respond to Christ’s call by living and spreading His transforming power. This is expressed in fraternal life and apostolic zeal.

Carmelites seek the face of God in the world, listening to and engaging with history. They show solidarity with all who suffer and hope, offering a prophetic witness of justice and peace.

This way of being “in the midst of the people” is a sign and prophetic message. Carmelites commit to transforming sinful systems into grace-filled ones, sharing in the lives of “the little ones” and living in allegiance to Christ and the poor.
